Clash of Clans just made its biggest beginner-friendly change in years
On May 26, 2026, Supercell deployed a significant update for Clash of Clans that fundamentally reshapes the early-game experience: the Barbarian King — the very first Hero and a franchise icon since 2013 — now unlocks at Town Hall 4 instead of Town Hall 7. Combined with a new extra Builder for the Builder Base and long-overdue Gold Pass improvements, this is one of the most player-facing quality-of-life updates Supercell has shipped since Town Hall 17.

Barbarian King at TH4: what you need to know {#barbarian-king-th4}
The rationale is straightforward: player data showed that too many beginners were quitting before ever reaching Town Hall 7 — and therefore never meeting their first Hero. By moving that milestone three Town Halls earlier, Supercell gives new players a meaningful power spike sooner and teaches Hero mechanics (funneling, tanking, ability timing) weeks ahead of schedule.
Here’s how it works in practice:
- Town Hall 4: The Barbarian King unlocks alongside the Hero Hall at 50% of his standard Level 1 stats (HP, DPS, and equipment are all scaled down).
- Stats scale automatically: As your Town Hall levels up, the King’s base stats improve automatically — no manual action required on your part.
- Dark Elixir progression unchanged: Upgrading the King still requires Dark Elixir, which only becomes farmable at Town Hall 7. The TH4–TH6 King is a scaled companion, not a fully powered Hero.
- Equipment follows the same rule: Base equipment values start lower at TH4 and rise automatically with each Town Hall level gained.
Even at 50% stats, a TH4 Barbarian King represents a genuine tactical advantage: he can tank mortar shots, back up Giants, and introduce beginners to the Hero funnel concept long before they enter the Dark Elixir economy.

Builder Base gets an extra Builder {#extra-builder-base}
The second headline feature is a new fifth Builder for the Builder Base (BB). This extra Builder lets you run one additional upgrade simultaneously in your BB, meaningfully accelerating progression in a game mode that has historically felt slower than the Home Village.
Requirements to unlock it:
- Have all five Home Village Builders already unlocked.
- Have reached Builder Hall 2 (BH2) or higher.
- Purchase the new Builder from the shop.
The prerequisite of owning all HV Builders gates this perk behind a modest but real investment, ensuring it rewards committed players rather than benefiting raw beginners from day one.
Gold Pass improvements {#gold-pass}
Supercell addressed two long-standing community pain points around the Gold Pass in this update:
- Retroactive Stamp Card bonuses: Players who purchase the Gold Pass mid-month now receive the Stamp Card bonuses for days already elapsed, retroactively. No more penalty for buying late.
- Loyalty rewards: Consecutive Gold Pass subscribers now receive a small loyalty reward for back-to-back monthly purchases.
Neither change is earth-shattering on its own, but the retroactive bonus in particular had been one of the top-voted community requests for years and its absence was frequently cited as a reason not to buy Gold Pass late in a month.
Skeleton Kingdom season recap {#skeleton-kingdom}
The May 26 update falls within the Skeleton Kingdom seasonal theme running throughout May 2026. The Gold Pass for this season unlocks a Skeleton Warden skin, while Skeleton-themed cosmetics are available for all main Heroes: Skeleton King, Skeleton Queen, Skeleton Champion, Skeleton Prince, and Skeleton Warden.
Key events in the Skeleton Kingdom season:
- Clan War Leagues: May 1–11, with new Battle Modifiers in Titan and Legend leagues, and 15v15 or 30v30 war format options.
- Clash vs. Skeletons: May 4–18, a community event with progressively harder challenges and escalating rewards.
- Dragon Duke Unlimited: May 27–31, where the newest Hero can be used without stat restrictions.
Why this matters {#why-it-matters}
Unlocking the Barbarian King at Town Hall 4 is more than a balance tweak — it’s a clear signal about Supercell’s 2026 priorities for Clash of Clans. The focus is squarely on new player retention: data showed players were churning before ever reaching that pivotal first Hero, and the fix is designed to create an emotional attachment to the game much earlier in the journey.
The extra Builder Base Builder meanwhile attacks one of the mode’s chronic weaknesses — slow progression — to make BB feel like a worthwhile parallel experience rather than an afterthought.
