By God Alone confirmed for September 30, 2026 — the Pope is finally playable in CK3

On June 17, 2026, Paradox Interactive confirmed the release date: By God Alone, the first major expansion of Crusader Kings III’s Chapter V, launches on September 30, 2026 on PC, Mac, and Linux. The announcement, paired with a new trailer centered on Vatican politics, finally puts a firm date on what had only been “Q3 2026” until now.

  • Release Date: September 30, 2026
  • Price: $19.99 standalone — $43.99 in the Chapter V Pass
  • Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux (Steam, Paradox Store)

Table of Contents

Four new interconnected systems

By God Alone rebuilds how Christianity works in CK3 around four mechanical pillars.

Rites model local variations in religious practice. Rites that diverge too far from orthodox faith drain the Church’s wealth and authority — and may trigger heresy declarations. In practice, you’ll have to choose between conformity and doctrinal rebellion.

Archdioceses are new clerical titles that exercise authority over a geographical region, independent of political borders. An archbishop embedded in your realm isn’t just another vassal: they’re an autonomous political actor with their own resources and ambitions.

The College of Cardinals grants the Holy See the ability to appoint cardinals throughout Christendom. Secular rulers can attempt to influence these appointments to steer the Church’s direction — an indirect influence mechanic that mirrors the great medieval Investiture Controversies.

Spiritual Fulfillment is your character’s personal faith gauge, running from -100 to +100. Traits, decisions, and religious tenets interact to shift this value, with effects on piety, clerical opinion, and dynastic prestige. A hypocritical prince who sins while projecting false devotion risks watching this gauge collapse — with meaningful narrative consequences.

Monastic Orders, Holy Sites, and Councils

The June announcement clarified several additional mechanics:

  • Monastic Holy Orders become centers of scholarship and theological power, offering substantial bonuses to those who host their headquarters. Their main value: contributing to Spiritual Fulfillment, protecting secular rulers from eternal damnation.
  • Dynamic Holy Sites evolve with faiths. Cathedrals can become points of veneration for specific saints and organically attain Holy Site status — it’s not locked into the starting configuration.
  • Ecumenical Councils introduce a persistent Situation for Christian realms, allowing you to influence Faith’s development and its major theological controversies.

For those wanting to play a theocracy — Pope or Archbishop — new resources of power and wealth will be available, opening up a playstyle centered entirely on ecclesiastical politics.

Silk & Silver: Merchant Republics coming in Q4 2026

By God Alone is only the first half of Chapter V. The second major expansion, Silk & Silver, still expected in Q4 2026, will tackle another long-standing gap in the game: playable merchant republics. Merchant families, town mansions, exotic trade routes, and rivalries between Venice, Genoa, and Pisa — gold will become as powerful as blood. Its exact release date has not yet been announced.

What to expect on September 30

The date confirmation wraps up a project announced April 20, 2026, when the 1.19 “Scribe” patch launched. After years of community requests for a serious overhaul of faith in CK3, the expansion appears to have taken the challenge seriously: four interconnected systems, playable theocracies, deep clerical politics. At $19.99 standalone, that’s in the normal range for a major Paradox expansion.
