Everything we know about By God Alone, the next CK3 expansion: playable Popes, College of Cardinals, Rites, and the Spiritual Fulfillment system.

CK3 Chapter V brings the religion overhaul fans have been asking for since 2020

On April 20, 2026, Paradox Interactive announced Chapter V for Crusader Kings III alongside the release of patch 1.19 “Scribe”. This new expansion pass ($43.99) bundles two major additions: By God Alone, a deep overhaul of religion and theocratic gameplay, and Silk & Silver, which finally adds playable merchant republics. For the first time in CK3’s history, you will be able to sit on the throne of Saint Peter and wield the power of the Church directly.

The ambition here is significant. By God Alone doesn’t just bolt new events onto the existing faith system — it rebuilds how Christianity functions in the game from the ground up, with four interconnected new systems: Rites, Archdioceses, the College of Cardinals, and Spiritual Fulfillment. Here’s everything confirmed so far.

What By God Alone changes about religion in CK3

Religion in CK3 has always been important — but mechanically shallow compared to its historical weight. By God Alone aims to fix that.

The biggest structural change is playable theocracies. You can take control of the Holy See, appoint your own bishops, excommunicate kings, and reshape European politics without ever raising an army. For players who love indirect power, political maneuvering and long-term influence, this opens an entirely new campaign style.

The expansion also introduces Rites — a system modeling localized variations in religious practice. Instead of treating each faith as a uniform block, Rites track how liturgical customs diverge between regions over centuries. This creates organic pathways for heresies, schisms, and internal church reform driven by gameplay rather than scripted events.

The College of Cardinals and Archdioceses

Two new tiers of religious governance give the Pope — and the Church more broadly — a distinct institutional structure within the game.

Archdioceses are new clerical titles that hold religious authority over a geographical region, independent of secular rulers’ lands. An archbishop in your territory becomes a genuine political actor who can balance your influence, resist your reforms, or actively work against you if you neglect the Church’s interests.

The College of Cardinals lets the Pope appoint cardinals across Christendom, weaving a network of religious allies and rivals spanning the known world. As the Holy Father, your political map extends far beyond any single kingdom — you’re managing a continent-wide institution.

These two systems are designed to work in tandem: as Pope, you operate a religious map largely independent of the political one, with its own power dynamics, resources, and long-term goals.

Spiritual Fulfillment: a new roleplay engine

The most conceptually original system announced for By God Alone is Spiritual Fulfillment, a gauge running from -100 to +100 that tracks how closely your character actually lives according to the tenets of their faith.

Character traits, decisions, and the specific tenets of your religion all interact to shift this value. A devout ruler who honors vows, supports crusades, and protects the Church builds Fulfillment — earning bonuses to piety, clerical opinion, and potentially dynastic prestige. A hypocritical ruler who sins privately while displaying public devotion suffers the reverse: internal crisis events, loss of clerical support, and the risk of a scandal that reshapes your dynasty’s trajectory.

This turns faith from a static background attribute into an active narrative engine — one of the most meaningful roleplay additions to CK3 since Royal Court.

Silk & Silver: merchant republics arriving Q4 2026

The second expansion in Chapter V, Silk & Silver, addresses another long-standing gap. Available in Q4 2026, it makes merchant republics fully playable for the first time.

You’ll lead a merchant family, manage a dynasty mansion, trade exotic goods, and compete to dominate the most valuable commercial routes from the Mediterranean to the Silk Road. Gold becomes as powerful as blood — perhaps more so. The rival city-states of Venice, Genoa, and Pisa finally become viable campaign bases in their own right.

Why By God Alone matters

Since CK3’s launch in 2020, players have consistently identified the religion system as one of the game’s most underdeveloped areas relative to its historical importance. Previous expansions enriched other pillars — Northern Lords for Nordic culture, Royal Court for court politics, Fate of Iberia for Iberian factions. But the Catholic Church, the defining political institution of medieval Europe, remained mechanically thin.

By God Alone changes that comprehensively. Playable theocracies, a working College of Cardinals, independent Archdioceses, a Rites system, and Spiritual Fulfillment together build the religious layer that CK3 has needed since day one.
