Grand Cathay Reborn: Everything Update 8.0 Changes

On May 21, 2026, Creative Assembly dropped Update 8.0 for Total War: Warhammer 3 alongside the Bhashiva Character Pack. For Grand Cathay players, it ranks among the faction’s most substantial overhauls since launch: a new Legendary Lord, three fresh units, reworked heroes, and a completely restructured technology tree.
Here is everything you need to know.

Bhashiva, the White Tiger of Shang-Yang {#bhashiva}
Bhashiva is built to play nothing like any Grand Cathay option before her. Where Miao Ying leans into formation depth and defensive pressure, and Zhao Ming favours a diplomatic and economic approach, Bhashiva is designed around ambush, speed, and disruption.
Her playstyle revolves around lightning strikes, flanking manoeuvres, and withdrawing before the enemy can respond. Creative Assembly explicitly designed her as Grand Cathay’s predatory, disruption-focused option — filling a gap the faction had since day one.
On the campaign map, her bonuses focus on army mobility, stealth, and the ability to wage war on multiple fronts simultaneously. Playing her feels markedly different from a standard Grand Cathay campaign in Immortal Empires.
Tiger Warriors: Three New Units {#tiger-warriors}
Bhashiva comes with a unique recruitment roster built around Tiger Warriors, available in three variants:
- Tiger Warriors — available with axes, guandao, or discs, offering tactical flexibility
- Tiger Warrior Stalkers — ambush specialists, perfect for flanking or hitting a column on the march
- Iron Claw Tiger Warriors — the heavy-hitting line variant designed to anchor a charge
Hotfix 8.0.2, released on June 2, 2026, adjusted Tiger Warrior recruitment costs (considered too powerful relative to their price) and fixed several crashes reported since the main patch went live.
Grand Cathay Tech Tree Rework {#tech-rework}
This is the most structural change in Update 8.0. Grand Cathay’s monolithic tech tree has been split into two distinct branches:
- Military: research focused on units, combat buffs, offensive and defensive capabilities
- Provinces: building upgrades, tax income, diplomacy, and economic output
The total number of technologies is unchanged from before the patch. What changes is that each research now covers a wider range of units and provides multiple simultaneous effects. Early campaign decisions become significantly more readable: you immediately know whether you’re investing into the war machine or into economic expansion.
Reworked Heroes {#heroes}
Three Grand Cathay heroes receive deep reworks:
- Gate Master: new offensive specialisations, less passive role
- Alchemist: redefined support role and debuff chain
- Astromancer: complete skill tree rebuild with new magical synergies
The Sky Lantern also changes role entirely: it shifts from a long-range sniper to an infantry-disruption unit, built to break enemy formations rather than pick off individual targets. This meaningfully changes how the unit fits into compositions.
Taoyan the Merciless — Free for All {#taoyan}
Players who don’t want to purchase the Bhashiva Character Pack still get a meaningful addition: Taoyan the Merciless is a free Legendary Hero delivered to every Grand Cathay Legendary Lord. She unlocks via a mission triggered once your lord reaches rank 12, regardless of which lord you’re playing.
What’s Coming Next {#whats-next}
Update 9.0 is scheduled for Summer 2026, bringing the Lords of the End Times DLC — including Nagash — and the free Neferata FLC. For everything on that upcoming content wave, see our Lords of the End Times preview.
